Archway (North)

Something unexpected is happening here. Designer boutiques keep popping up; fashion labels we've never even heard of--cafés so fashionably quirky they should really be in Shoreditch. But real change takes time and at night this becomes even more obvious. The Winchester is still the only decent pub around and The Caipirinha still stays open very, very late.

The Winchester Pub Hotel
The Winchester famously provided the name for the pub in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's debut film Shaun of the Dead. It was actually another pub, The Shepherds, just up the road where the comedy duo spent a large part of their 20s but, since The Shepherds changed its name to the Boogaloo and went all trendy, The Winchester is the standard bearer for proper pubs in the area. This means it's down to Earth but doesn't take its clientele for granted. It looks fantastic with its enormous bar and panes of frosted glass and yet it has a quiet efficiency that very few other British institutions could match. You can always get a table, the service is very quick and they serve nice, unpretentious food. There should be some kind of protection order on it because pubs like this are becoming increasingly hard to find.

Caipirinha Bar
With its sleek black walls and mural of a big-hatted musician holding his saxophone high in the air like he's about to hit somebody over the head with it, the Caipirinha Jazz Bar manages to make the legend "Live Jazz" seem like a terrible threat. It's true that the random squawking coming from the stage is often the worst thing about this place. But then, hey, it's jazz, it's probably supposed to sound like that. And, if you wander in here at 2 am, when everything else in the area is shut, the illicit speakeasy vibe is highly appealing.
