Sylvan Hills / Perkerson

The secret is out: Sylvan Hills is a great place to buy an older starter home with plenty of backyard and charm. This quiet neighborhood, which boasts a 50-acre park is just 15 minutes from downtown and conveniently located on the MARTA line (as well as the far-off-in-future Beltline). Renovation is the name of the game these days as families, and developers clamor to buy in while the economy is in the crapper.

College Park Coney Island
Summer has crashed in on the Atlanta scene and with it have come the perennial certainties: We will all suffer the intolerable humidity, our favorite bought-air-blasting taverns will become more crowded than usual as 9-to-5ers rush to get a cool afternoon people-watching spot, and I will develop a ravenous hunger for chili cheese dogs. I blame it on baseball season. With no ticket in hand and not wanting to endure another lackluster dog at the Varsity, I headed down Metropolitan to College Park Coney Island. Sure, it's in a spot that some Atlantans would consider the ghetto, but what's a little sketch in the face of good grub? After all, it's not Stewart Avenue anymore, it's Metropolitan (say it with me kids, MET-RO-POL-I-TAN), so all the hookers are gone. College Park Coney Island, which aptly delivered a most phenomenal snack, was completely worth the trip. "It's the all-beef hotdogs," confided Lorenzo, the friendly owner who hails from Motown. "It’s something," I said, as I savored the toasted bun and perfectly melted cheese. My joy only grew when I paid for the thing. At less than $2 a pop, I dare anyone to find a better deal on a chili laden wiener. Who knew such scrumptious and cheap bites were hiding out in the 'hood?
